Never thought about sixteenths vs eighths. (AHA!!! here to learn!) Thank Gollywogs, I can sing the groove, knowing we'll find the ballpark. I highly recommend Kent’s books! I bought them several years ago and refer to them frequently. The content is presented well with excellent examples, exercises, and tunes to demonstrate and help you practice the concepts. The best part is Kent literally has hundreds of great youtube videos also working through almost all of the concepts in the book. The PDF format was very helpful as it allowed me to keep a copy in forScore on my ipad for easy reference.

My mother played stride piano at home not professionally . And piano and organ in the church .That was of course in the 50"s and 60"s, Fun stuff.my dad played Banjo in the Minstrel shows in Ohio and produced.

music theory is essential. you can speak another language by sounding out the words but you'll never understand what it means or be able to speak it without understanding the mechanics behind the language. Its the same with music. You're job as a musician is to articulate emotions. Its by far the most powerful universal language. It binds us all together.

The beauty of music. I've heard lots of Coltrane and this song numerous times. But I discovered your video trying to understand why Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead based his rythmn guitar behind Jerry Garcia on McCoy Tyner's work with John Coltrane. Your video is an education even for a guitar player. And even though it's goes by too fast for my level. I was lucky enough to see McCoy, though not Coltrane. Though I did know a lady who went with her girlfriend to pick Coltrane up on the Jersey turnpike when his car broke down. Great video. Thank you.
